The Eiffel Tower, Paris

The Eiffel Tower was built for the International Exhibition of Paris of 1889 commemorating the centenary of the French Revolution. The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII of England, opened the tower. Of the 700 proposals submitted in a design competition, Gustave Eiffel's was unanimously chosen.

However it was not accepted by all at first, and a petition of 300 names - including those of Maupassant, Emile Zola, Charles Garnier (architect of the Opera Garnier), and Dumas the Younger - protested its construction.

At 300 metres (320.75m including antenna), and 7000 tons, it was the world's tallest building until 1930. Other statistics include:

  • 2.5 million rivets.
  • 300 steel workers, and 2 years (1887-1889) to construct it.
  • Sway of at most 12 cm in high winds.
  • Height varies up to 15 cm depending on temperature.
  • 15,000 iron pieces (excluding rivets).
  • 40 tons of paint.
  • 1652 steps to the top.

Vardar River Skopje Makdonia

Skopje is the capital of the Republic of Macedonia. As largest city in the country, it is a political, economic, and cultural center of Macedonia. It lies on the upper course of the Vardar River and is located on a major north-south Balkan route between Belgrade and Athens. I am standing on the old turkish bridge. It was built during the Ottoman rule, i.e., in the second half of the XV century, between 1451 and 1469, under the patronage of Sultan Mehmed III the Conqueror.
The earliest mention of the Bridge in the historic records is contained in the vakafnamata (records) of
Isa - Beg's Aladza (Motley) Mosque, in 874 according to Hijra, i.e., 1469 A.D. Its master-builders are unknown.
The original shape of the Bridge consisted of 13 vaults with a total length of 329 local feet or 213.85 metres (one foot = 0.65m). The total width of the Bridge was 6.33 m. That was the Bridge as seen and described by the Venetian Giacoppo Soronze who, on his journey to Constantinople (1575), stayed in Skopje.

Kale Fortress Macedonia
Skopje has many historical monuments including The Kale Fortress raised in the 6th century (its present appearance dates from the Turkish period), the Daut-Pasha's Amam (public bath, 15th c., now the Art Gallery), the Mustafa-pasha's mosque (15th c.), the Clock Tower (16th c), and the Stone Bridge over the Vardar river. The Stone Bridge gives access to the old part of the city where one can find many cultural and historical monuments. Built by the Turks on the site of a Roman bridge, the Stone Bridge has eleven arches and bears a plaque in the middle stating that it was restored by Sultan Murat II (first half of the 15th century).
Basilique du Sacre Coeur (Sacred Heart)
After the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, it was proposed to construct a church to the Sacred Heart on the butte Montmartre. Although originally the fund raising was by public subscription, in 1873, the National Assembly declared its construction to be a state undertaking. Of the 78 entries in the competition for its design, the one chosen was by the architect named Abadie. He was already well known for his restoration of the St-Front Cathedral in Perigueux. The plans for the new basilica called for an edifice of Romano-Byzantine style, and the first stone was laid in 1875. Abadie himself died in 1884 with only the foundation having been completed. Completed in 1914, it was not consecrated until 1919 after World War I had ended. The final cost was 40 million francs. Since 1885, there has been perpetual adoration and worship within.

The interior of the church contains one of the worlds largest mosaics, and depicts Christ with outstretched arms. The nearby bell tower contains the "Savoyarde". Cast in Annecy in 1895, it is one of the worlds heaviest at 19 tons. From the top of the Dome, there is a panoramic view in all directions extending over 30 kilometers.
