Sultan Murad Mosque SKOPJE

Sultan’s Mosque, was built in 1463 by Sultan Murat as his endowment, a unique mosque of this kind. The Sultan built two more endowments in Bursa and Izmir in Turkey.

The mosque is situated near the Old Bazaar in Skopje. It survived several disasters two fires and the earthquake in 1963 but it still remained and was later reconstructed. The plates in the front part are engraved with names of sultans and dates of undertaken reconstruction of the mosque. It is assumed that the original shape of the mosque is the same as in the two other buildings that were mentioned above.Today there is a porch in front of the northwestern side with four columns with beautifully decorated caplets. They are connected by arcades that hold the roof construction. The internal room is on a square base and is separated by two rows of three columns, joined by semi vaults, which compose three unequal boats.
